During the summer, there’s always a lot of temptation to plan a big vacation or take day trips, go shopping, and dine out. But when you live in downtown Indy, there are also plenty of free ways to have fun in your city, too. If you live at Wesley Place Apartments in Indianapolis, you’re within walking distance of many of them. If you have a car or a bike, you can easily reach memorable destinations around your city that are entertaining and free of charge.

Tour Indy’s Public Art
Indianapolis is vibrant and rich with culture, and if you’ve never toured the public art around the city, it makes for the perfect excursion on a mild summer day. Use the Indy Arts Guide public art directory to ensure you see them all!

Walk the Indianapolis Cultural Trail
Walking the eight miles of trail that connect the six cultural districts in downtown Indianapolis is a great way to spend time outdoors without spending any money. There’s even a map so that you can easily locate noteworthy destinations along the way such as The Indiana State House, The Indiana War Memorial, Madam Walker Theater, Poet’s Place, and Swarm Street. The map also notes downtown public art installations.

Free Events at the Indianapolis Public Library
For more free art, check out the Universal Drip 2 Exhibit presented by Omar Rashan and We Are Indy Arts in the Center for Black Literature & Culture (CBLC) at Central Library from August 9th to September 9th.

The Yarnslingers meet every month at the Central Library to work on projects, share their recent creations, and discuss fiber arts.

Enjoy a free performance at the Central Library by the Indianapolis Chamber Players on the second Sunday of each month at 2 p.m. These “Second Sunday” events are made possible by the Friends of the Library through their gifts to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.

Picnic at the American Legion Mall
Between St. Clair and North, and Meridian and Pennsylvania streets, are the World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Cenotaph Memorials. Accessible via the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, the extensive grassy lawn is a popular public place for festivals and events, but it’s also a great place to visit for free with your own picnic, blanket, and perhaps a good book.

Markets and Street Festivals
Street markets and festivals may have temptations, but they are always free to walk!

Free and family-friendly, Indy’s annual Feast of Lanterns features more than 70 artists and neighborhood vendors, plus live music, food trucks, and a kids’ zone.

IU Health Momentum Indy is the event celebrating the Indy Criterium and Mass Ave Criterium which brings in cyclists from all over the midwest to race through downtown Indianapolis. The festival features a kid's race, food trucks, a beer garden, a picnic, yoga in the park, vendors, live bands, BMX stunt shows, and other activities.

Walk the original Indianapolis outdoor market Wednesday evenings in the summertime, but be warned that there are plenty of tasty things you’ll want to bring home!
